Zinaida Serebryakova (1884-1967) Russian artist who studied under
Osip Braz. Her father was a well known sculptor and Ekaterina Lansere,
her mother, was an artist. She continuously strove to capture the beauty
of the landscapes and people she painted. She had 4 children when her
husband, an engineer and a writer, died of Typhus. This occurred near

the time of the October Revolution which also greatly affected her life.
The following year a fire destroyed her home and many of her paintings
that were stored in the house. Her children were born in 1906, 1907,
1912 and 1915. She moved to the country to raise her children and sent
her paintings to galleries in St Petersburg where they met with great
success. Her self-portrait, perhaps her most well known work, was
painted while snowed in with her family. When her eldest daughter
joined the ballet, her work began to center on depictions of the stage
and ballerinas.
