Play is often talked about as if it were a relief from serious learning. But for children play is serious learning. Play is really the work of childhood.

Pierre Auguste Renoir (1841-1919) was one of 7 children
and began an apprenticeship as a porcelain painter in Paris
but loses his position with the invention of cheap printing
techniques. He studied art at the studio of Charles Gleyre
where he meets Monet. After obtaining permission to copy
works of art at the Louvre, he studies Rubens in particular.
In 1880 he meets Aline Charigot who later becomes his wife.
In 1885 his first son Pierre is born and he is followed in 1894
by another brother, Jean. Claude was born in 1901.

Portrait of Claude Renoir Painting was completed in 1907.
Claude, Renoir's youngest son, is portrayed ignoring his father
who is painting his portrait and focused on his own work of art
in front of him. He wears a painter's smock with brush cloth in
his pocket. Claude was the subject of many of his father's
works.
